The Ladies In My Life

I’m very lucky to have some wonderful ladies in my life, and since I’ve been running around with my new camera (review to follow soon) driving them crazy, I’d thought I’d invade their privacy and upload a gallery of them onto the internet. In no particular order of course!

Welcome to the family baby Belle.

JustHost

I have been hosting this blog with JustHost for about 6 months now, and overall I have been very disappointed with the hosting I have received. The price is good, and the reviews I read were also good, but I have had nothing but trouble.

First all my add-on domains disappeared for no reason. The a post disappeared. Then the entire site was down for 2 days (hardware failure I was told), and then the site went down a few days later again (DNS issues I was told this time).

It’s all happening

It’s been quite a long time since I posted anything, and even longer since I posted anything substantial. The last few months have been extremely busy, with both work and personal time being fully stretched. I am happy to announce that I (think) I became the first dotMobi certified mobile web developer in South Africa, which means that Be-Mobile is the first dotMobi certified mobi development house in the country. I received my certificate yesterday, and while I am not one for certificates, I thought it was quite cool none the less.

Be-Mobile also launched our new web site at http://www.be-mobile.co.za and to top it all off we also launched our first mobi site at http://m.be-mobile.co.za GO YOU GOOD THING!

I fee like I have been coding like a mad man lately, and I think it shows. We have launched a number of campaigns in the last week alone, namely

The Be-Mobile asset management engine also served it’s 1,000,000th file a few days ago. While this is not a massive achievement, I am still proud of it, and believe it is the start of great things to come for our platform. A lot of work has also gone into our reporting capabilities, and I think they are starting to generate real value to our customers.

I’ve been listening to a lot of trance while I work, and I’m loving DJ Aspeth. If you get a chance check her out, she posts a monthly mix called her TranceCast, and it rocks!

On a personal level, Tammy’s sister had her baby on Monday, happy birthday baby Cinzia!

Megan turns 17 months old tomorrow, and is walking around like a champion! She is so full of beans and full of life, and I love her more and more every day. We both went for our pictures for the green card lottery on Tuesday, and she was so cute in hers I had to post it.

Happy 17 month birthday my angel!

During the course of the next month I hope to hear about my visa, so I’m holding thumbs, and quite stressed about that. Until then I’m gonna keep on keepin’ on…

Twitter Down

I went to twitter today, and for the first time I got the “Twitter is over capacity” message. I heard they had many problems a few months ago, but thought they were through the worst of it. As an IT geek I’d love to know more about their architecture, does anyone know of anything like this?

#Iburst FAIL FAIL FAIL

I have been a customer of IBurst for a number of year, approximately 3.5 I would say. In that time the service I received from Iburst has always been average, with issues ranging to service not working, to double billing, to not running the debit order at all, and then cutting me off.

In recent times they have lost thousands of emails (not mine fortunately, but my poor Mom and brother) and this week many web sites that I rely on for my business have been inaccessible. I have spent approximately 1.5 hours on the phone to the call centre in the last four days, I have never been called back, and I have never received ANY feedback as to when the issue will be resolved.

Last night I found out that they changed their pricing, and that for R599 you now get 5gigs, rather than the 3gigs I am on. I was never informed of that, and I was not moved onto the new pricing, even though I am paying the same amount. That is disgusting and unethical.

Iburst, with the competition coming, I’d suggest you get your act together, or else people are going to be flocking from you in droves. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to call Neotel.

South Africa

This weekend, for some reason, I really got a dose of optimism about South Africa. While Carl Niehaus was busy signing fraudulent cheques, and the ANC continues their tactics of violence and intimidation, I just couldn’t help but feel good about SA.
The reason is probably three-fold.
Firstly, I have been spending a lot of time on twitter, following some really clever, articulate South Africans, who give me great hope that the brain drain is really not too bad, and there are some smart people left.
Secondly I went to Pretoria yesterday, and the construction that is going on along the freeway is phenomenal!
And lastly I am LOVING South African music. I really think the standard of South African music has gotten to a point where it is world class, and the bands are really producing some amazing stuff! I’m loving The Dirty Skirts, Prime Circle, The Parlotones, and Jacks Panic. Awesome stuff!
To that end, I’ll leave you with Prime Circle — She Always Gets What She Wants — Storming video boys!
