I’ve been due an upgrade on my cellular contract for the past two years, but due to the face that I was planning to emmigrate, I had not taken it up yet. Over the past few months I have made some huge changes in my life, one of them my decision not to leave the country, so, time for an upgrade.
I’ve been using the Nokia N80 for a while now, and I am very happy with it, so the decision to go Nokia was easy. I’ve had the phone for two weeks, and my impressions of it so far are good.
Infact, I’d say it is the best phone I have ever had. Period. Lets start with the features.
- 16GB internal flash memory
- 2.8″ QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) LCD TFT display with up to 16 million colors
- User Interface: S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2
- Broadcast Television (DVB-H) capable
- Recording of TV programs for later viewing
- Digital music player – supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+, WMA, album art
- Stereo FM radio
- Internet Radio
- Any many many more…
The things I use the most are the phone (surprise surprise) and SMS. The sound quality on the phone is great, and the keypad is perfect for SMS. It is not a QWERTY keyboard but if I wanted that I would have gone for the E71. The only issue I have with the controls is that the scroller button squeaks when I use it — something it started doing after only 2 days.
The email setup was simple, importing contacts and messages from my old phone was simple, and the WIFI works well.
As far as applications go the one I use the most is Gmail, followed by Nimbuzz. Both work fine, although I felt Gmail worked better on the N80, as it didn’t always pop up with a security message every time it refreshed.
The software on the phone is very easy to use, whether you are a seasoned Nokia user or not. The only thing I would recommend is doing a software update the moment you get it, as it definitely is needed to bring some stability to the phone.
Overall my first month with my new N96 has been good, an easy transition, easy to use, good on calls, and very pleasing on the eye. Now bring on DVB-H…
