Current Reading

I’m currently reading a book by Rodney Mullen called The Mutt: How to Skateboard and Not Kill Yourself. It is about Rodney Mullen, how he came to start skateboarding, and how he came to dominate freestyle skateboarding at such a young age. I’m only half way through the book, but the real take away for me so far is the absolute, unwavering dedication he had to skateboarding, even as a young kid. He would practice for hours and hours everyday, on his own, and with little to no support from his family.

The book does cover skateboarding in some detail, and he talks about many of my childhood hero’s that I had as a young skateboarder, and while I realize that this book may not be for everyone due to the skateboarding backdrop, the real story so far is the inspirational passion and determination he had when it came to doing something that he loved, and going into a new year that is something that we can all learn from.

Google+

I started using Google+ a couple of weeks ago, and it is really good. I have never been a fan of Facebook because of their privacy policies, and Google is certainly better in that regard. The interface is also cleaner, and the concepts of circles, streams and sparks are awesome. Definitely worth switching if you are a social network junkie.

Here is a link that the first 150 users that click on it can use to get onto Google+. https://plus.google.com/_/notifications/ngemlink?path=%2F%3Fgpinv%3D8GfNXfAn6f8%3Al8V442GXlC4

Enjoy.

New Site

As many of you know I have been doing a lot of trading over the past few months. I’ve started a web site where I journal my trades, analysis etc. I’m still a noob in the market, so I’ll probably get a few things wrong, but it’s fun nonetheless. The URL is www.robbersdogs.com

The Ladies In My Life

I’m very lucky to have some wonderful ladies in my life, and since I’ve been running around with my new camera (review to follow soon) driving them crazy, I’d thought I’d invade their privacy and upload a gallery of them onto the internet. In no particular order of course!

Texas Potjie 2010

Over the labor day weekend we went away to the 10th annual Texas Potjie. For my American friends, potjiekos, literally translated means “small pot food”. From Wikipedia — “In South Africa, potjiekos (pronounced /ˈpɔɪkiːkɒs/), literally translated “small pot food”, is a stew prepared outdoors in a traditional round, cast iron, three-legged pot (the potjie) which is found in the homes and villages of people throughout southern Africa.[1] The pot is heated efficiently using small amounts of wood, charcoal or if fuel is scarce, twisted grass or even dried animal dung.”

Despite the fact that fuel was not scarce, and no animal dung was used, we had a great time! It was awesome to get together with over 850 South Africans, and basically get a bit of perspective about this adventure we are on.

I was fortunate enough to be a judge of both the boerewors & potjie competitions, and the food was brilliant!

A big thank you must go to Esme & John Els, as well as all the other who were involved in organizing the weekend, I can’t wait until next year!

JustHost

I have been hosting this blog with JustHost for about 6 months now, and overall I have been very disappointed with the hosting I have received. The price is good, and the reviews I read were also good, but I have had nothing but trouble.

First all my add-on domains disappeared for no reason. The a post disappeared. Then the entire site was down for 2 days (hardware failure I was told), and then the site went down a few days later again (DNS issues I was told this time).

Tips for 2010 football fans going to SA

Having lived in South Africa my whole life, I’d say I know the place fairly well, and I also know the various do’s and dont’s of the country. So I thought I’d put together a list of things to do, and not to do for all the football fans travelling to SA for the FIFA soccer world cup 2010. I’m sure that some of these tips will be treated with scepticism, and some may even anger some people, but I am merely speaking from my experience after having lived here for 32 years. Use it, don’t use it, your choice, here goes.

  1. Don’t walk around outside at night. Ever. Especially if you are alone.
  2. If you hire a car, be aware at all times of your surroundings. Here are some safety tips to prevent hijacking  from the South African Police Service.
  3. If you are accosted, look at your assailants as little as possible, don’t look them in the eye, and do EVERYTHING they say.
  4. Beers in a pub or restaurant generally cost between R10 and R15. Be careful not to be ripped off. I’m sure many English supporters will be staying at Sun City, beers there are a rip off, usually costing between R25 and R30, so drink elsewhere or be prepared to cough up.
  5. Hire a car during your stay if you can, SA has terrible public transport.
  6. South Africa has an official AIDS infection rate of about 11%, though I believe it to be closer to 35%, so keep it in your pants at all times.
  7. There is no need to go to the centre of any city. Ever.
  8. Try Boerewors, you’ll love it. In fact, eat as much meat as you can while visiting, the meat in SA rocks.
  9. Visit the Kruger National Park, you won’t regret it.

As I think of new items I’ll add them to the list, so keep checking back. Enjoy the football!
