Castle Designated Driver

Today we launch another mobile campaign. The campaign is called “Castle Designated Driver”, and is an initiative by SAB. From the press release:

Castle Lager Executive Brand Manager, Charl Bassil, says Castle Lager has partnered with taxi service, SACAB, to promote responsible behaviour during a period when drink-driving statistics typically increase. “We’re committed to helping people enjoy their Castle Lager’s responsibly and we are keen to entrench designated driver behaviour, where one friend takes it upon himself to get his mates home safely after a night out” he says.

The promotion will run at 80 venues around the country until the end of December 2009. Consumers will be encouraged to nominate themselves as designated drivers for the night to Castle Lager promoters at the various venues. Willing participants will undergo a breathalyser test when they register and another one towards the end of the evening before they go home. To encourage minimal alcohol intake during the promotion, each designated driver will be given free soft drinks.

If designated drivers are below the legal limit by the end of the evening, they will be entered into a lucky draw. Each week four designated drivers will stand a chance of winning a year’s free cab rides from SACAB. ”

Be-Mobile is of course responsible for the mobile element, a mobi site which can be found at http://castledd.mobi.

It’s a great initiative, so lets hope it takes off, and people enjoy the festive season responsibly.

Two New Campaigns

The past two weeks gave been both exciting and extremely stressful. We launched two new campaigns, and both are doing exceptionally well. The first is a product launch for Revlonman of their new fragrance Radar, and we are giving away a prize of R20,000. The exciting thing about this is that we are one of the first to be using The Grid, a mobile social network in South Africa. The campaign can be found at http://www.ontheradar.mobi.

The second campaign is for a movie launch for Nu Metro. The movie looks exceptionally funny, and the campaign is doing well. We are giving away a trip for you and 3 mates to Las Vegas, which is an awesome prize! The campaign can be found at http://www.hangovermovie.mobi.

Be-Mobile Web Site

Well it’s taken us over 6 months to get our web site up, but we’ve finally done it. Despite the fact that it is not exactly our corporate identity on display, or the rather slim content, I am proud to announce that www.be-mobile.co.za is finally live.

For those of you who don’t know, Be-Mobile is a company myself and a couple of partners started. We specialise in mobile content delivery, mobile marketing campaigns, mobile services, anything mobile really. We are actually quite good at what we do, despite our rather modest web site, so check us out.

Mobile Food For Thought

I recently read this on Nokia’s web site, and it makes for interesting reading.

There are about 4 billion mobile phones in use in the world today. They’re the world’s most popular technology, outnumbering televisions 3-to-1 and PCs by more than 4-to-1. With 40 per cent of all internet users having mobile internet access,[1] these small screens are rapidly becoming the main way people access the internet globally.

And the growth is significant, with the number of mobile internet users doubling between 2006 and 2008.[1] By 2012, half of all devices accessing the internet will be mobile devices.[1] It’s also a global phenomenon: There are about 117 million Chinese mobile-web users, an increase of 113 per cent during 2008 alone.[2] And it’s outstripping desktop browsing growth: In the U.K., mobile internet growth between Q2 and Q3 was 25 per cent, compared with 3 per cent growth in use from PCs.[3]

PPS4Life

Today Be-Mobile launched a new campaign aimed at university students. The campaign is for PPS, and the goal is to educate the students about the great packages PPS offers for them. There is a big screen TV to be won, and also spot prizes on campus. So far the response has been good.

Supa Strikas

Today Be-Mobile launches the first phase of Supa Strika. It is a very exciting time for Be-Mobile, and for me personally. Supa Strikas is a popular football comic in Africa, across about 18 countries, with a television show in South Africa as well.
This is their first real foray into mobile, and with the excellent quality content that Supa Strikas delivers, I have no doubt that the service will be a success.
The first phase launches in Kenya today, followed by launches in South Africa and Nigeria soon afterwards.
Personally, I am very excited to monitor the new mobile content management software that I have developed. This is the first site that is running on the new transcoding engine, and I think it will be a real differentiator for us in the marketplace.

Nokia N96

Nokia N96

Nokia N96

I’ve been due an upgrade on my cellular contract for the past two years, but due to the face that I was planning to emmigrate, I had not taken it up yet. Over the past few months I have made some huge changes in my life, one of them my decision not to leave the country, so, time for an upgrade.

I’ve been using the Nokia N80 for a while now, and I am very happy with it, so the decision to go Nokia was easy. I’ve had the phone for two weeks, and my impressions of it so far are good.

Infact, I’d say it is the best phone I have ever had. Period. Lets start with the features.

  • 16GB internal flash memory
  • 2.8″ QVGA (240 x 320 pixels) LCD TFT display with up to 16 million colors
  • User Interface: S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2
  • Broadcast Television (DVB-H) capable
  • Recording of TV programs for later viewing
  • Digital music player – supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+, WMA, album art
  • Stereo FM radio
  • Internet Radio
  • Any many many more…

The things I use the most are the phone (surprise surprise) and SMS. The sound quality on the phone is great, and the keypad is perfect for SMS. It is not a QWERTY keyboard but if I wanted that I would have gone for the E71. The only issue I have with the controls is that the scroller button squeaks when I use it — something it started doing after only 2 days.

The email setup was simple, importing contacts and messages from my old phone was simple, and the WIFI works well.

As far as applications go the one I use the most is Gmail, followed by Nimbuzz. Both work fine, although I felt Gmail worked better on the N80, as it didn’t always pop up with a security message every time it refreshed.

The software on the phone is very easy to use, whether you are a seasoned Nokia user or not. The only thing I would recommend is doing a software update the moment you get it, as it definitely is needed to bring some stability to the phone.
Overall my first month with my new N96 has been good, an easy transition, easy to use, good on calls, and very pleasing on the eye. Now bring on DVB-H

MotorokrStar

This weekend we launched the first mobile campaign built on our mobile campaign manager system. The competition is for Motorola, and it is called MotorokrStar. The idea is to upload a video of yourself auditioning to be a rock star, and the prize is a trip to New York to meet and work with Wyclef Jean, and a recording contract. Very nice prizes and a great concept. On a personal level I am happy with how the campaign manager has handled. It has proven to be easy to work with, and has drastically reduced our development time. Mission accomplished.

To check it out go to www.motorokrstar.mobi, or SMS “rokr” to 39066.
